DReaming bright

Dreaming Bright tells the story of Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and her accomplishments on and off the ice. The exhibit is split into these two segments, and highlights her accomplishments from her past to present day. Visually, the exhibit uses the idea of dreams and dreaming to create a warm and inviting space that is colorful and fun.

CONCEPT

Originally, the exhibit was going to use more delicate, and soft visuals, that complemented the gracefulness of ice skating. A shift was then made to explore a bolder, and colorful approach that better suited Mrs. Yamaguchi’s bold personality and warmth.

The visuals used through the exhibit are inspired by the circular, graceful movements in figure skating. A grain was also used to give texture, and mimic a frosted look, like the ice in an ice rink. To convey the idea of dreaming, a dicut cloud, with a pink drop shadow was added to not only give a sense of depth, but also to give the exhibit a dream-like feeling.

FLOOR PLAN

Initially, the room was to be separated into three sections, in the final, it was decided to split the exhibit 60/40 to put more emphasis on Mrs. Yamaguchi’s philanthropic work.

Curved walls were used to not only break up areas of the exhibit, but to mimic the circular movements in figure skating. This also gave the exhibit a more organic flow.

The exhibit would also feature a custom library nook with a book shelf that fits the curve of the wall.

3D RENDERS

The final space hopes to be inviting for guests, as well as serve as an outlet for creativity and imagination. It’s goal is to encourage people of all ages to dream big and bright.

The library nook

The reading nook featured in the exhibit was inspired by Kristi Yamaguchi’s non profit organization, the Always Dream Foundation. The organization focuses on children literacy, and providing reading resources for families. The nook provides a space that invites people to sit and read.

Our dreamers

The exhibit also features a wall of fake books that would represent each family that the Always Dream Foundation, Kristi Yamaguchi’s non profit, has helped since its founding in 1996.

INTERACTIVITY

The exhibit features two interactive elements for visitors. The first, is a mimic game where people can mimic iconic figure skating poses during Kristi’s figure skating career.

The second interaction, is a blank wall where people can write what their dreams are, which is the main idea of her non profit organization.
